#196 - Assignments and Recovery

Good morning.

So yeah. I didn’t end up writing my assignment last night and may have blown through the deadline.

And to make matters worse, I only woke up at twelve thirty in the afternoon. Robyn slept soundly beside me as well. We were both shattered from yesterday and from all this week had to throw at us as well.

We stayed in bed watching television for a few hours and then Robyn left to pick up the kiddo from work again. Then we watched an episode of Daredevil and The Boys.

By that time, I was feeling more like myself again and set about getting ready to write. I had a USB hub to set up to power my desk lights, and I need to do some cable management for all the other bits and bobs around my writing cave. Things were getting out of control.

I made myself a Nespresso coffee, Maple Pecan flavoured, grabbed a can of Dr. Pepper Zero and headed downstairs. I hadn’t posted my blog from yesterday, so I added a few lines and posted it. I started writing today's entry as a warmup for the assignment.

And now, it’s quarter after six, and I am finally getting down to it.

I’ll likely comeback here later with my thoughts on the assignment.

I am about 6700 words behind on my word challenge as of now. I’d expect the writing assignment to be at least three to five thousand words. Sci-fi always needs more setting descriptions that a present-day story. My teachers often say if your story would normally be three thousand words long, your sci-fi will need five thousand to do the same thing.

People are more familiar with present-day things than the made-up ones in science fiction.

Okay. Time to get some writing done.

Back later.

I got a start on the assignment. The start of a story is always slower than the rest of it. I got about four hundred words so far and can already see some changes I am going to need to make.

We ordered some Chuck’s Roadhouse for dinner. I was craving salty meat, and I will confess I wanted a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder, but I had to consider the wife and the kiddo.

For some reason, whenever I get into something that requires a lot of my brainpower, I crave salt. Maybe the brain uses sodium in some way, not sure. Anyway, the Chuck’s Smokehouse burger hit the spot.

Then it was right back to writing cave.

The writing is going slower than hoped, but I think this could be another novel if I wanted it to be. I’ve only written about seven hundred words in total, but the opening is starting to take shape that I find pleasing.

Revealing the right information at the right time is crucial.

I took a break to soak my sore back in the tub and then did some stretches on the floor. That seemed to help a lot. I then did a twenty-minute deep rest, no sleep session, to give me a bit more energy to keep going all night long.

I finally finished my assignment. I’m not sure if I hit this one out of the park. I did struggle with it a bit. I may need to change up the action being portrayed. I had my characters perform a spacewalk while discussing the politics of their world.

But it’s three AM, and I am tired once again.

Off to bed.

See you tomorrow.
