#265 - Toy No Story

It felt great to sleep in today. I sure needed it.

Robyn was up at nine thirty to do some overtime work painting backgrounds. I was feeling completely run-down from the week and stayed in bed. I put on some YouTube videos and then watched an episode of ‘For All Mankind.'

My stomach started grumbling, so I messaged Robyn downstairs to see if she was amenable to having some Bagel Barn for breakfast.

She was.

I slipped downstairs and out the back sliding door to have a look at the garden. Everything looked to be doing well, and I even harvested a handful of strawberries from the hanging planter.

Have to grab them before the squirrels make a meal of them.

It would be over an hour to get to the house, so I continued to watch the show. It’s been a good run for this series, and it was a good projection of how our world could have turned out. They have made a spin-off series that views the same events through the Russian point of view called ‘Star City.’ Looking forward to seeing that one, eventually.

I should have been writing during this whole time, but I just didn’t do it.

When the food arrived, Robyn took a break from painting. I made us some tea to go with the food and then we sat down to eat together, each of us making happy food noises of appreciation. The food from Bagel Barn really hit the spot this morning.

I went out to get my dad a Father’s Day present of some fine Scotch and then I stopped at Winners and bought some fancy bowls/plates. And I also found some new mixing bowls that all had lids and nested inside each other like Russian dolls.

I picked up a porchetta sandwich from Sobeys, and let me tell you, they make a great porchetta sandwich. It might even have been perfect. I rarely think to stop there for a meal, but they have some great stuff at the food counters.

Definitely going back for another one sooner rather than later.

Robyn left later in the afternoon to see a friend.

Again, I should have been writing.

Instead, I baked a batch of healthy muffins and a double batch of rosemary salt. The rosemary salt is simple to make, but it makes all our roasted vegetables super tasty.

Then I headed our ensuite to use the hair trimmer on my scalp and beard. This is the second time I have used this new trimmer, but it is woefully underpowered compared to my last one. It isn’t as nice to use and I find myself avoiding trimming my head because of it.

Yet, I was in need of a trim, so I powered through it. At some point I chose the wrong depth setting and shaved more of my beard off than I had planned to. So I look a bit odd today as a result. Not a big deal, it will grow back fast enough, it just another reason I don’t like using this new trimmer.

But again, I should have been writing.

We had plans to see Toy Story 5 later at night around nine or so. I had time while Robyn was with her friends and then went to her support worker job before we would have to go to the movies.

I did not write a single word.

I took a spa bubble soak and then took a short nap.

There was a moment when I almost started to write, but I stalled. The odd part is I really am interested in this story and finding out what is going to happen. I love the first scene I wrote.

I’m not sure why I am hesitating, but I clearly am.

Robyn returned and we all piled into my car and headed out to the theatre.

It took a bit longer to get there because Robyn accidentally bought tickets for the movie in the next city, mostly she was looking at what time the movie started. And to add fuel to the fire the highway was backed up with traffic. Eventually we passed a supped-up rally car on the side of the highway. There were tire marks on the road and one of the wheels was lying further on down. It told the unfortunate story of a car that lost a wheel at highway speeds and then swerved the side violently. They were lucky the passenger tire came off and not the driver side one or they would have swerved into high-speed traffic.

Luckily, we made it to the theatre unscathed and managed to find a parking spot. They lot was almost completely full of cars.

Inside, a young woman wearing Jessie cowboy hat greeted us at the entrance. She seemed very pleased to be wearing the outfit. As we walked towards the food vendors, we notice all the female staff were wearing the hats, just like Jessie from Toy Story. There were kids running around having a great time and taking pictures beside the giant Spork character they had on display.

Everyone got some chicken strips, and I ordered a chai tea latte. The only drink I ever get from a Starbucks. I did snag one of Robyn’s chicken strips when she ran out of plum sauce and lost interest in the last strip. I was more than happy to step up and do my husbandly duties of eating the leftover food on her plate.

Delicious.

The movie was very well done. I went in there wondering what more could they possibly do with this series. I was happy to see that they pulled it off. The comedy was there and somehow Disney managed not to mess this one up like they have so many other franchises that they own. And I bet they really need a win and the cash flow it will bring.

Pixar at least, still has some of that magic dust to sprinkle on their projects.

It was heart warming and touch as they always are and entertaining for all ages. There were lots of pop culture references to give the adults a good chuckle.

I ordered a few items from Amazon to take care of little things that annoy me, but I haven’t had time to get around to fixing. One is the remote for our blackout shades and blinds in the bedroom. The remote battery has been dead for months and I just keep forgetting to unscrew the back plate and see what kind it takes.

Two 2032 3V coin batteries as it turns out.

I only had one in the house and swapped it out for one of the dead ones. It got the remote working for now. I’ll swap out the other one when I get a chance this week.

The other issue that bothers me is the new 65-watt charger I bought for my laptop came with a six-foot cable. It was the only option at the time. My old cable was ten feet which was the perfect length to use my computer while in bed. The six foot one is just a little short.

And that annoys me.

Problem solved tomorrow when the longer cable arrives.

I find am very sensitive to loud noises today and I am not sure why. I think it’s a sign that my brain just wants to shut down, but the environment and the people around me just aren’t allowing it to happen. It could be the stress of the writing assignment, or it could be the compounding effect of not really having a weekend off when we were doing repairs at the cottage last weekend.

I do feel like I am on a hamster wheel lately.

Good things happened today too. Kiddo #1 had her first day at the new job. Mostly a orientation day, getting to know the other staff and her supervisors.

They had pizza, sandwiches and wraps prepared for them at lunch, which is always a nice touch from an employer.

Tomorrow we are headed to my sister’s house to celebrate Father’s Day. My brither in law is said to be making homemade pizzas. He made some tasty pizzas last year we all loved. The pepperoni and hot honey were a big favourite. He’s made a second kind as well this year, last year it was potato, but this year it is still a mystery.

Guess we’ll find out tomorrow. Whatever it is, I am confident it will be delicious.

I am going to get a decent night’ sleep and start my assignment before we head to my sister’s place. Then I’ll finish it up when we get back home and Robyn leaves for her support worker job.

I should stay up tonight and write, but I just don’t have the energy left.

Night all.
