#300 - Quesadillas For The Win

We managed to stay in bed until noon.

I felt much better than I had the night before. Clearly, I needed the rest. I went outside to inspect the plants, stopping to water them and admire the oriental lilies that were in full bloom.

My gladiolus in the pots had wilted and looked bad. I think maybe they got too much water and not enough sun. The ones in the ground seemed to be doing just fine. I can’t remember when I planted them, but I recall it takes about one hundred days for them to bloom.

I came back in and made some tea for the two of us and floated the idea of getting some bagel barn for a late breakfast. There was zero interest on my part to cook anything. I was quite content to lazy about all day. Robyn agreed and in half an hour we were eating in style while watching a few episodes of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. It’s a cute show with some twists and turns. We ended up finishing up the season. I looked like they were ready to make another one, at least they left the door open in the story to film the next season.

Afterwards, Robyn took a nap, and I ventured out onto the back deck and took a nap there after playing a game of online chess. The temperature was warm and very humid. After an hour or two, I’d had enough and moved back inside. I was developing a mild headache that seemed to have something to do with the weather and a pain in my gums after using the water flosser on too high of a setting.

I needed to start thinking about our cottage meals, so I checked to see what ingredients we had in the house. I pulled out some ground beef to make a meatloaf and gathered all the ingredients for making Chicken Ruby. I don’t have the inclination or the desire to make anything today, but I could at least see what was missing. I’ll need to get a jar of passata to make the meatloaf, but otherwise it was looking like I would be able to knock of at least two of the five meals we need for our vacation.

Our friends, Paul and Laura, invited us over for supper this evening, meaning I won’t have to cook a single thing today. Sweet joy!

I’ve been feeling a bit off today. A bit like being hungover without the headache and queasy stomach. I felt this was due to a lack of vegetables. It was my body calling out for nutrients and vitamins. I made up a batch of AG1 and drank it down.

About half an hour later I started feeling better. Not one hundred percent, but better. Knowing we would be out being social this evening, I made a cortado to give me the boost I was going to need.

I think I have really settled on the Nespresso Piccolo Bianco as my go to capsule. It works well with milk, making it perfect for a cortado.

Settling myself back into our room, I joined Robyn, who was watching a Netflix documentary. One of those murder ones. They seem to be really popular. This one had three main suspects and kept you guessing on which one was the mastermind behind them all.

Robyn left for her second job, and I finished watching Batman Begins from yesterday. I had about fifteen minutes left in the film, so I switched over to Star City when if was finished. The time came for me to gussy myself up for the evening’s soiree. There isn’t much to gussy these days, so it didn’t take long.

Star City is turning out to be an interesting show. The Russian side of things is interesting because of the political complications that go along with trying to get into space. It’s fun to see it from the other side after watching For All Mankind.

It’s been a really lazy day so far and that is just what the doctor ordered. I expect to have a more energetic day on Sunday. I also have a great deal of writing to do as well. It’s going to be a bit of a slog to make the word count this month and I’ve only got seven days left to do it.

Tomorrow, Robyn has plans with her ladies to go for a walk and get some lunch. I’ll need to make sure I use that time to write. As it stands, I need to write for about five to six hours a day to make the quota. Nothing new to see here if you’ve been following along on these pages.

But now it’s time to leave for our friends.

I hope their bird doesn’t try to make love to my socks again.

Spoiler alert: The bird came to say hello but did not have its way with my outfit.

We arrived a little after eight PM at Paul and Laura’s and settled into seat to have chat before Paul started making our dinner. We talked about shows we’d watched and The Odessey as they were deciding whether to see it. Paul got up to start the dinner which was to be homemade quesadillas filled with steak, shrimp or both. There was cheese and sautéed bell peppers as well. We topped them with salsa and sour cream, and it made for a delicious meal. We all had two servings.

For dessert, Laura had baked some lemon bread and put it our with an assortment of fruit. We dined on fresh cherries, sweet honey dew melon, strawberries and blueberries. I for one ate way too much. We retired to the couches and sipped on tea and some Costco vanilla hazelnut coffee.

The conversations lasted until about midnight when Robyn and I started yawning. It was a nice night filled with good company and good food. We left with full hearts and full bellies.

Back home we stayed up to one AM, me writing and Robyn reading her book.

I was very tired, but I needed to have something written before I went to bed. The time for pushing through exhaustion is now upon me.

One of the things we discussed was the new season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. I wasn’t able to get through watching the last season because of how they were treating known characters. I felt the show was too silly and didn’t seem to know its own pedigree. I disliked how the character of Spock was portrayed. One of the things that made Spock so interesting was his constant internal duel with his two sides, the logical Vulcan and the emotional Human.

It seemed to me, in this new iteration of Spock, he was overly emotional and the struggle, the internal conflict, was missing. Spock became an emotional buffoon. Some of the other story lines were lifted straight from the original show, but they don’t work well in modern Trek.

When it came to my recommendation of The Odessey, I had to tell them it was worth seeing in the theatre, but it wasn’t a great film. It was good film with some issues. It’s long and some of the actor’s deliveries felt flat. Some of the plot was not explained well enough for anyone no familiar with the ancient Greek myths and the film often focused on things I thought went on too long, while other parts were glossed over.

But still, it might be the only real block buster film of the summer. Our next big hope to draw people back to the theatre is Dune: Part Three.

While we were out, the kids had some friends over. Kiddo #1 and two friends went to the movies and then had a sleep over. They left shot glass and a micky of Dr. Magillacuddie’s Peach Snaps on the kitchen table. Looks like they had a little bit of a party.

When I was younger, I was smart enough to clean up our mess after having a few adult beverages. Destroy the evidence as it were. Kids these days.

It’s late and I am ready to call it a day.

Until tomorrow.
