#309 - Recovery Day

I made it to bed by eight AM feeling not too bad about the story I wrote.

It wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever done, but it took some effort. Writing in historical times is something I am new at. What was important to me was to finsihs the assignment and hand it.

Completing meant I could move on to enjoying my vacation and start the process of recovery. But that couldn’t completely happen today. Today was about recovering from the long writing session. Getting into bed at eight felt amazing. I slept until about noon and got up feeling surprisingly well all things considered. But this happens every time and I have to remember that later on in the day I will have to pay the price.

Robyn and the kids had been up for hours and had just finished eating French toast when I strolled into the kitchen. I made myself a turkey and cheese sandwich. I’m a sandwich guy for sure, but I rarely have them anymore. I think we just don’t have the cold cuts in the fridge I never think about making one.

The amount of rain we had yesterday up here in Haliburton was nuts. It was constant rainfall. I haven’t seen it rain all day in a while. In my hometown Niagara I am seeing posts from friends whose basements are all flooded. It appeared to be happening more than the average number of people you’d expect. Everyone there is calling out for the municipality to do something about the sewers and water management.

In contrast, today was just about perfect.

After my meal, I headed down to the dock where Robyn and the oldest were hanging out on the dock. The youngest was busy editing his video in his room inside the cabin. Kiddo #2 was determined to get some colour. Her plan was to get burnt. To me this sounds like lunacy, but she has some Peruvian heritage that is better at tanning than my Scottish skin.

I did a little reading down at the dock. I brought the Sand Pebbles novel that is an action adventure on the rivers of China. It’s a good book so far but my ability to concentrate was not great today. I finally gave up and set up the hammock and sunshade just outside the cabin.

That got me all hot and sweaty. The sun was blazing and I needed to cool down. A quick change into my swimwear and I of course, remembered to grab my white captain’s hat. I blew up the S.S. Woodzo, the floatie with a canopy cover over it, and fashioned an anchor out of a tie down strap, the bag the floatie came in and a good-sized rock.

It was the Woodzo’s maiden voyage of the season, and it all went well. The water was cold and refreshing and there was a stiff breeze keeping all the bugs away. The anchor worked as well as I could hope for and kept my floatie from drifting away with the wind and current.

I was able to shut my eyes and just float. Every time my eyes fluttered open, a gorgeous view from across the lake of cliffs and trees reflecting in the water under a blue sky was there to greet me.

After cooling off and resting, I decided it was time to take a real nap. This might have been around four PM. I’m not sure of the exact time my head hit the pillow, but I do know I woke up at 9 pm feeling like I could just go right back to bed. I knew this would be a mistake and throw off my sleep patterns worse that they already were.

I rose and went into the kitchen. Robyn was up but the kids were napping. The two is decided dinner would be every man for themselves and we both made sandwiches, which I was completely down for. Kiddo# 2 came down later and reheated some leftover Chicken Ruby.

We downloaded the new episode of Lioness from Paramount and enjoyed the first episode of season three. My internet usage for my phone resets tomorrow and I was getting warnings about nearing my limit after downloading the show.

I had the entire first season of Widow’s Bay loaded onto my iPad, so we gave that a shot. It was the perfect night to chill and watch some shows at the cottage.

Widow’s Bay turned out to be a blast. It has a series of great characters and anything that has Stephen Root in it is okay by me. The writing on the show is great. It’s a bit supernatural, a little jump scary but also funny and silly. I’m looking forward to some more episodes tomorrow evening.

Tomorrow, I hope to get the kayak out for the first time this year and get in a short paddle. My one in the morning and another in the evening if the weather permits.

Time to get my first proper sleep in weeks.

Until tomorrow.
