#313 - Another Hat Another Day

We were up by ten thirty this morning and the sky looked grey and uninviting.

I made everyone bacon, eggs and toast for breakfast. I wanted to get rid of the last of the bacon and eggs and most of the bread. Who doesn’t love eggs and bacon for breakfast anyway?

I also managed to finish up the last of the orange juice too.

We hung around a bit, the weather did not entice us to go into the lake, and I think we were all a bit wound down. We planned to go into town so kiddo #2 could practice his driving and also use the town library’s internet to download some sound for his film.

Driving out of the cottage we noticed the animals had been into the garbage we’d left in a garbage pail. We stopped to clean it up.

While in town, I took the opportunity to grab another Haliburton ball cap in blue since they fit my head so well.

It was a warm and humid day, so we also got some ice cream which is also a family cottage tradition. We stopped by the local art museum, and I bought Robyn a glass sculpture of a Scottish cow. She has a thing for Scottish cows. Not sure what that says about me?

I knew she wouldn’t buy it for herself, so I treated her to it as a wee gift.

Returning home we all split up to do our own things. Robyn claimed the hammock to read in, and the kids went to their rooms to read or work on their projects.

I headed down to my favourite spot, the dock. I brought a bag of things I might need like a drink, a book and glasses, and sunscreen. I made sure I changed into my swim trunks as well. I’d thoughts of taking the kayak out, since the water was like a mirror today.

But as I sat at the dock under the shade of the umbrella, I could feel the heat building inside of me. I grabbed the lifejacket I used for the kayak and one of our floaties and immersed myself in the cold water. It was a shock to the system at first but as I placed the floaty under my legs and the life jacket supported my upper body it was like floating on a cloud.

All the heat ebbed out of my core and I slowly cooled down. I lay there floating like boating victim. If anyone had passed by they might have thought I was near death, just floating in the lake. But it felt heavenly and I was glad to have done it.

Now that I was perfectly cooled off and at a nice temperature, I got out my book and reading glasses and read a few chapters of The Sand Pebbles. After reading for an hour or so, I started to get a little tired. The words were getting harder to make sense of.

I closed the book and removed the glasses. Sitting still I just closed my eyes and let my mind wander. This felt like the best thing I could have dome with my time at that moment. There was no sense of time being wasted at all. I felt like I had finally reached that stage of vacation were sitting still is a perfectly fine thing to being doing with your day.

I was off the treadmill of life.

It felt an awful lot like meditation, but it lasted for hours and hours. Everything in the world just went away and I was content to close my eyes and let my mind wander as it wanted.

I did this until about six o’clock, when I thought people might be getting a little hungry for dinner. Robyn made herself a peanut butter and banana sandwich and it was then that I knew all bets were off. It wasn’t going to be my premade meatloaf. One of the kids doesn’t like and I didn’t make sense to go through the effort for just myself and kiddo #1.

I was happy to just make a really nice turkey and cheese on a bun with a side of plain potato chips.

I walked down to the dock with my iPad and iPhone in hand trying to get a second bar on the cell signal so I could download some episodes on the Apple TV app. I’m sure it looked silly, but I did find that extra bar at the end of the dock.

Robyn made us some teas, and we sat down together to watch the newest episode of Silo. We followed that up with the newest Ted Lasso. Both shows were great and we enjoyed them.

Checking my iPad, I saw a movie that I had downloaded before leaving home called The Drama. I had no idea what it was about or who was in it, bit we gave it a try anyway.

It started Zendaya and Pattison as a couple about to get married when all of a sudden something from one of their pasts gets revealed and it all goes off the rails in their personal and professional lives. The wedding is only days away.

It was cheeky and odd and sometimes uncomfortable, and we both thought it was a lot of fun. That got us to about eleven when Robyn and the kids went to their rooms and I started writing towards my quota.

I did a load of laundry while we were watching the shows so we would have less to do tomorrow. We usually have to leave by noon, but the owner came over to tell us know one was renting the cottage next week and we could even stay an extra day if we wanted.

We have people coming over on Sunday to celebrate my dad’s birthday so we couldn’t stay an extra day, but we won’t have to scramble to clean the cottage, pack the car like we normally would on our last day. We are thankful that he thought of us at all after loosing his wife on Tuesday.

I think I will keep this one nice and short tonight and get a good night’s rest.

Until tomorrow.
