Writing Failure 2

I am still full from dinner at the Keg last night.

So of course, that meant we had breakfast plans with two other couples at 9:30 am. Life is tough some days, but I aim to endure. Breakfast was at the Stacked franchise and was delicious. It was great to catch up with friends and hear about one of the couple’s recent trips to Jamaica.

On the downside, I didn’t write a single word other than my blog entry yesterday. Complete lack of energy on the writing front. I read those books by Chris Fox. Most of the advice was something I knew about or was already doing. But sometimes you need to be reminded of the things that will keep you moving forward. Just because you know something, doesn’t mean you are doing it or doing it well.

There were a few nuggets of advice I will take with me moving forward. One thing I am going to try starting Monday, because I like to start new things on a Monday, is getting up early to do a writing sprint. The sprint will be about 20 minutes long. Then, I’ll probably either go back to bed or make myself some breakfast. I’ll be tracking my Words Per Hour for each session and using that metric to gauge any increases in my daily word count.

I am currently recording my words per day, so recording my words per hour isn’t that much of a hassle I have a spreadsheet all set up for that.

In the late morning, I’ll do another writing sprint. Again, for about twenty minutes. In the later afternoon, I’ll do two or three writing sprints to bring the total writing time to and even hour.

It’s not unusual to get about 300-500 words written in a good twenty-minute session. The purpose of these sessions other than putting your butt in the chair and producing words is to train your mind to enter the flow state the makes the writing feel effortless and more joyful.

The other thing it will accomplish is the formation of a habit. A habit that is in line with my goals.

I’ll keep you posted on that as the week rolls out.

All that non writing yesterday was replaced by watching the final episodes of Stranger Things on Netflix. I have to say there were a few teary-eyed moments as some of the character arcs started closing their loops.  I think that overall, the production did a great job. The show had a great feel to it and was something the whole family could watch together. That’s not the kind of show that gets made a lot these days.

Good job Duffer Brothers!
